The Banshee leaves the factory as a 347cc parallel twin with a 64mm bore. Riders have been adding displacement for decades, and 421cc has become one of the most popular big-bore builds. Here is how to decide which way to take your machine.
The case for a fresh stock bore
A properly rebuilt stock-bore Banshee is still a fast, lively machine. It is the most forgiving setup to own: parts are straightforward, pump fuel is usually suitable for a mild build, and service intervals are relaxed compared with a high-strung big bore.
- Lowest cost to rebuild and maintain
- Easiest to tune and live with
- Great base for pipes, reeds and carb upgrades
A 64mm stock-bore rebuild kit or a forged piston kit is the usual starting point.
The case for a 421
Going to 421cc adds a lot of displacement, and with it more torque everywhere in the rev range. You feel it on dunes, on hills and coming out of corners. If you want the Banshee to feel properly stronger, this is the usual route.
- Stronger pull everywhere in the rev range
- A proven, well-supported Banshee build
- Pairs naturally with pipes, reeds and larger carbs
Plan the supporting mods
A big bore is a system, not a single part. The best builds plan these together:
- HeadCompression and dome volume to suit the displacement and your fuel.
- PipesChambers that put the power where you want it.
- Carbs and reedsEnough flow for the extra displacement, jetted correctly.
- ClutchThe extra torque will find a tired clutch quickly.
- DrivetrainAxles and chains take more abuse, especially on sticky tires.

Reliability and fuel
More power usually means more heat and more frequent top-end service. Higher-compression builds may need higher-octane or race fuel, and jetting becomes more critical. Be honest about how you ride and how often you want to wrench.
Which should you choose?
If you want a dependable machine for trail riding and occasional dune trips, a quality stock-bore rebuild with a few bolt-on upgrades is hard to beat. If you want the Banshee to hit harder and you're ready for the extra planning and maintenance, a 421 is a rewarding build.
